Popularity: China 1 - USA 0
Did you hear? According to an opinion poll in 16 different countries, China is more popular than the US!
Wow.
The Pew Research Center published the poll today, to the great revelation of most people.
Or is it surprising?
After the War in Iraq, it seems that the US is no more popular as Vanuatu. But does it matter?
Anti-Americanism has been an issue in East Asia for quite some time. Will it get worse? Hard to say, but perhaps we'll start to see the political repurcussions, as the children who grew up with anti-american sentiments are now at the wheel in various Asian governments.
Or is it just a media/general hype?
What is the role of the US in East Asia? - Lemme hear your say:::

Yo Soeren.
This is just media hype. The fact is that many people are annoyed at the US right now, primarily because the 'people' of the US have voted in a chimp for a 2 time presidency.
In the meanwhile, you are seeing quite powerful and moderate figures leading in East Asia (with the exception of Kim Jong Il). The similarities between the leaders on both side of the Pacific is that they are trampling on human rights and press freedom.
Until President Bush gets out of office and is replaced by a moderate voice (like Wes Clark), the US will continually lose its ability to be viewed as a top (or welcoming) world destination.
As is, moneymaking opportunities are higher in China today than the US.
so think about it.
Besides man, you really need to start giving more opines.
Like I said before
this is your blog
this is your church
this is where you heal your hurts.

As always, thanks very much for your reply to my posting. It is very useful to receive feedback - and please let me know if there's an issue you think should be posted on the site- asia east blog is not a proprietary place - its a forum for everyone to learn and speak their voice on the topics involved. ON that note, I must disagree with your "church" analogy. Religion has often been a cog in the wheel of human development in my opinion as I don't care much for "one-sided/dogmatic" points of view, which often is preached in churches all over the world. Instead, I hope this site would spur discussion (as through these messages) with the purpose of fostering discourse toward better understanding, transparency and ultimately, peace (and fun, as well)
Thanks once again.
soeren, you said

while i agree that you would like people who come to this site to engage in masterdebation, you must realize that you must start it. By starting a discussion of sorts perhaps you could opine, or play a devil's advocate, somehow stir up a conversation that gets people to reply.
Myself, I am very interested in East Asia. More interested because I'm expecting the giant China to fall within the next 2 years. I for one, believe that the Bush Middle East policy is to drive up energy prices so as to destroy the fabric of Chinese Communist party and to create a "democratic" revolution there so that US companies can have more control over their investments than worry about Chinese officials.
Try seeing through that prism Alexander, and perhaps you will see why many Business Republicans stick with Bush (in spite of their unease with the Evangelicals).
so man, more opines.

please, call me Berham.
Berham - your comments are as intriguing as always.
I do, however, disagree, as I consider my role on this blog to be more of the carrier of the news, events, passing on of the 'discussion baton, and mainly guide the topics towards discussion. I am obviously not having that much success - but I dare not take the route of many popular 'talking heads' of dogmatically or provocatively choosing one side of an argument. My hope is to stand at the crossroads and have other pull the teams of horses in opposite direction and enjoy the show. From time to time, I think it’s beneficial to say something provocative or spur some kind of discourse. But in the long run, if a blog sticks to its own opinion and beliefs it will ultimately only attract people who share this belief - and preaching to the choir has seldom helped broaden a better understanding and tolerance for those who are unlike us.
